How to Make Broadband Faster

,
Broadband Internet service connections such as DSL and cable modems have become widely popular in the last few years. With download rates sometimes in excess of 10 mbps, they enable users to surf the Internet at lightning speed with quick downloads of even the busiest web pages. Unfortunately, the lightning speed can sometimes seem to slow to a snail's pace, particularly if you're trying to get something done on the Internet in a hurry..

Before doing anything with your broadband, ensure your operating system is optimized by defragmenting your hard drive. A fragmented hard drive can make it difficult for applications to quickly find the program elements they need to use to run, which can slow down the overall operation of your computer. Do this by clicking on the "Start" button in the lower-left corner of your screen, and then click "All programs," Accessories," "System Tools" and "Disk Defragmenter," in that order. When the disk defragmenter window appears, run it to the finish. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes, depending on your processor speed and the fragmentation level of your drive. This should now help your operating system run faster.

Next, optimize your browser by clearing your Internet cache. Getting rid of these unused files will help your browser identify where it needs to go more quickly. If you use Internet Explorer, open your browser (if it's not already open), and click on the "Tools" menu at the top of the screen. When it opens, click on "Internet Options" at the bottom of the menu, the "General" tab at the left, and the "Delete" button associated with browsing history, in that order. Then hit "Close" and "OK" to finish. Other browsers use a similar sequence to delete cached files.

To make your broadband connection run faster, several broadband accelerating shareware (free) programs are available at several different websites. Optinet, from sharewareconnection.com, and DrTCP, from coolbusteratyourservice, are two of the easier ones to get and use. Try downloading and installing one of those.
Keep only one application open at a time if you're not already doing that. Keeping track of more than one application will use up processor time that could be devoted to running your browser. Also, keep only one browser window open at a time. Keeping track of more than one Internet application uses connection time that could be devoted to downloading the site that you want to look at.

Finally, if you do a lot of online shopping, spend time in chat rooms, or otherwise connect to many different sites, you're eventually going to be targeted by adware and spyware. Both these types of applets, besides invading your privacy, are going to slow down even the broadest broadband connection. Spyware Doctor, from PC Tools, although not freeware (it costs about $30 per year), is the top malware removal choice for both PC Magazine and PC World. If you don't want to spend money, Spybot, from safer-networking.org, might work for you. It's freeware, but Safer Networking asks for a donation if you find Spybot useful...
